I was once in a professional role where I had a chance to see firsthand what it truly meant to play it safe.
Before this experience I didn’t fully grasp the concept. I will not name any names out of utmost respect for the individual. And just because he was more professionally cautious and deliberate than anyone I’d ever met doesn’t mean he wasn’t daring in other ways.
I think the most valuable lesson I learned is one of boldness. No matter what precedes us, I believe we have an innate need to be bold, daring and unprecedented. The riskiest part of us has an unquenchable thirst. However, whether we pinpoint a constructive outlet or channel for this unique burden is another story. I have no other choice but to believe this is the line between greatness and mediocrity.
